I remember writing my first poem as a kid. It was something about peace and war - just a few short lines that all rhymed. As juvenile as it sounded then, it became the springboard that helped me dive into the deep end of poetry in the years ahead.
Strangely though, I enjoyed writing more than reading others' lines. People would ask me who my favorite poet was or which book I had my hands on. But as a kid, Nancy Drew and Ramona Quimby were my main reads. They always headed out into the world with curiosity and innocence without losing their way home. In reading their adventures, I hoped that I too, could venture out and discover life as they did.
I am a firm believer that the written word brings us as close to a person, place or thing as events that actually happen. Whether it's a grocery receipt or a letter from my parents, I love to sit down on a Saturday afternoon and transport myself to that time, that person, that place. You know that feeling?
Writing awakens us. It invites us. It moves us.
